Youngstown and surrounding Mahoning County is home to Mill Creek Park, established in 1891 as the first park district in Ohio. Today, Mill Creek Park encompasses 2,658 acres, just about half of the MetroParks district’s more than 5,000 acres. Visitors can enjoy hiking and biking on the park district’s 45 miles of trails, along with boating, fishing, golf, tennis, volleyball, picnicking, cross country skiing, sledding, and more. Mill Creek feeds three lakes and includes Lanterman’s Falls and the Mill Creek Gorge, offering breathtaking views with its cascading waters, steep hillsides beautifully covered with deciduous and evergreen trees, bold sandstone outcroppings, and numerous grass-covered meadows.
Near Youngstown and Warren, visitors enjoy boating, swimming and water sports at Lake Milton, Mosquito Lake State Park, and Berlin Lake.
Lake Milton

Located in the northwest corner of Mahoning County, Lake Milton State Park includes a nearly 1700-acre man-made lake, completed in 1917 when a dam was installed along the Mahoning River.
Mosquito Lake

Located in northeastern Ohio, Mosquito Lake is one of the largest lakes in Ohio with more than 7,000 acres of surface area. The surrounding parkland covers 2,483 acres of mature woodlands and expansive marshes which provide safe haven for wildlife. Boating and fishing may be two of the top outdoor activities here, but the park also offers hiking, horseback riding, and snowmobiling in winter.
Berlin Lake

Berlin Lake is one of Ohio’s largest inland lakes with over 3,000 acres, making it ideal for all boating activities and fishing. Constructed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 1942, Berlin Lake sits on the Mahoning River at the intersection of Stark, Portage and Mahoning counties.
Mill Creek MetroParks

Located midway between Cleveland and Pittsburgh, Mill Creek Park’s convenient location makes each of its recreational areas easily accessible. There are educational facilities, stunning (free) public gardens, a performing arts pavilion, two 18-hole Donald Ross golf courses, playgrounds, lakes, ponds, wetlands, trails and breathtaking views – it’s a great place to spend an afternoon, full day or even a weekend!
